How Black Philanthropy, Digital Equity and Early Childhood Intersect
A parent in Charlotte looks for child care on a phone, then looks for a way to join a community effort that could help. Both start online. Across the Carolinas, families with young children often rely on the internet to find early learning, support and community. Black philanthropy gives time, talent, treasure, testimony and ties to this work, and uneven digital access can shut some families out.

Black Philanthropy + Digital Equity
The way into giving is now online
Giving circles, volunteer sign-ups and community events increasingly live online. When digital access and skills are uneven, joining in gets harder. The tradition is not missing; the channel shuts people out. Black philanthropy's five Ts show that giving takes many forms. Community groups should honor all five, not only the ones that need a steady device and broadband.
Digital Equity + Early Childhood
Finding child care starts with a search
Families look for early learning programs, apply to Meck Pre-K and find child development help online. The fftc:FWD Folio reports that 14% of Mecklenburg County homes lacked internet access in 2023. It also reports that 68% of children under age six in Charlotte-Mecklenburg live in families where all available parents work. For these families, no connection can mean no child care. Online access has become the first step toward pre-k.
Black Philanthropy + Early Childhood
Community giving can reach where public programs stop
Community investment can work alongside public early childhood programs. It can back what families say they need through time, talent, treasure, testimony and ties. A mentor, a trusted referral or a gift to a community fund can each help. That does not replace public responsibility, but it can fill gaps families feel.
