How Health Care, Digital Equity and AI + Community Intersect

Getting care in the Charlotte region now often starts on a screen. You may need a working device, reliable broadband, a portal account and the skill to use automated tools. That is true for booking a visit, refilling a prescription, renewing Medicaid or reading a lab result. When one link is missing, the gap shows up as a health problem, not a technology problem. AI is now adding another layer to that chain.

Digital Equity + Health Care

What telehealth and portals assume about the patient

Booking, intake, telehealth visits, prescription refills and visit summaries now run through portals. These need a working device, reliable broadband and the skills to use them. Without them, the same care is slower and leans on phone lines with fewer staff. U.S. Census Bureau ACS 2024 data show roughly 6% of Mecklenburg County households still lack a broadband subscription. Even a subscription may not be affordable or steady enough for a video visit.

AI + Community + Digital Equity

AI depends on the digital-equity foundation

Clinics, agencies and nonprofits are adding AI-driven chatbots and automated intake. Residents then need more skills to use them. They need a usable device and a reliable connection. They also need comfort with text screens and enough language fluency to read AI-generated answers. Each link is unevenly spread. Calling residents who struggle "obstacles" puts the problem in the wrong place. The responsibility sits with how institutions design and roll out these tools.

When automation helps and when it hides residents

AI tools in health navigation can ease the way for patients already at home with digital tools. For others, the same tool can give a fluent but wrong answer with no sign to seek help. That is riskier than a form that plainly fails. A person to talk to should be a basic standard, not a fallback. Health providers that check their patient experience by language, device and income can see who the automated path is missing.

How a digital gap turns into a health gap

  1. 01

    Broadband or device gap

A home without steady broadband or a good device cannot do a telehealth visit or open a patient portal.

  2. 02

    Portal and navigation barriers

Without portal access, refills lapse, lab results go unread and Medicaid renewals through ePASS stall.

  3. 03

AI tools add a new layer

Automated intake and AI chat tools ask for more skills, like language fluency and comfort with the screen.

  4. 04

    Care delayed, costs rise

People who cannot use digital paths start care later, turn to emergency rooms and face growing health costs.

Clinics can test new digital tools to see who gets shut out before launch. They can also fund real people to help by phone or in person, as a lasting service.
